Mentioned below are a few tips by famous photography schools that will surely help you to improve your sports photography skills:

You must know the rules of the game

Before you start capturing a game, you must know its rules. This will help you to understand the game better and click picture-perfect shots. If you do not know the rules, do not wait until the last minute to learn them. Ask one of your family members or friends, or you can research online.

Practice with the camera before

You do not want to enter the event with a camera that you have never used. Although cameras have a simple and similar interface, you might find it a little difficult to use. Locating the buttons and changing the settings while following the game can become a little difficult with a new camera. You might miss a few great shots if you take too much time to set your camera. Also, irrespective of what camera you are using, you must know how to manage the exposure by setting the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. If you do not know how to use a camera, take a photography course.

Always set a fast shutter speed

No one will wait for you to click a picture in a game. You must use a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion. This will help you to avoid taking blurry pictures. If sufficient light is available, a shutter speed between 1/500s and 1/2000s is considered appropriate. However, you must keep in mind that the shutter speed should be set according to the speed of the movements. In sports such as swimming, you can use a slower shutter speed but football or basketball requires a higher shutter speed.

Choose the positions from where you will shoot

The positions from where you shoot have a huge impact on the results. You must get a clear view of the game. Also, the subject should be facing you. Hence, visit the location a little before the game starts and decide the positions from where you want to click the pictures.

Telephoto zoom lenses are great

Experts always suggest using an entry-level telephoto zoom lens for sports photography. They do not cost a lot of money but prove to be very useful on a number of occasions. A 55-200 mm with f/4-5.6 lens will provide you with the necessary flexibility within a budget. You can always opt for better lenses if you can invest more money.

Carry a wide-angle lens

Telephoto lenses are not the only lenses you will require for sports photography. You must carry a wide-angle lens as well. It will certainly help you to add an interesting spin to your photographs.

Camera flash is of no use

Never use your camera’s built-in flash for sports photography. A flash unit attached to the hot shoe should not be used as well. This is because a flash will not be able to illuminate your subject from such a long distance. Also, using a flash can distract the athletes and spectators.
